Former home and studio of Alexandre Markelbach

SATURDAY 01 and SUNDAY 02 OCTOBER 2022

Meeting point

Chaussée de Haecht 159 - 1030 Schaerbeek

The former home and studio of the painter Alexandre Markelbach, located at 159 Chaussée de Haecht in Schaerbeek, is a Neo-Classical townhouse built in the 1850s, in the first stage of the development of the area into a suburb of Brussels. Markelbach was a painter who had trained at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts: he moved to Brussels in the 1850s and lived and worked in this building. He served as a member of Schaerbeek town council from 1879 to 1890. The building's Neo- Classical façade has been well preserved, and the interior contains a magnificent Regency-style reception room (where one of Markelbach's paintings still hangs), leading to a Neo-Renaissance-style dining room. Up the main staircase on the first floor is the Neo-Renaissance-style former studio of the artist.

Important notice: following discussion with the owners/managers, you are kindly requested to wear a face mask when visiting this building. For security measures, visitors are requested to leave their cellphones at the entrance. They will be kept under surveillance by one of our staff members. Thank you for your understanding.
