Royal Chapel

SATURDAY 01 and SUNDAY 02 OCTOBER 2022

Meeting point

Place du Musée 2 Museumplein - 1000 Brussels

Construction of the chapel began on 1 May 1760 to the design of architect Jean Faulte. Its layout was inspired by the chapel at the Palace of Versailles and its appearance was inspired by the chapel at the Château de Lunéville, birthplace of Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine. Several styles rub shoulders in the building, which heralds the Louis XVI style. A decree signed by Emperor Napoleon I in 1804 gave the chapel to the Protestant church. The first King of the Belgians, Leopold of Saxe Cobourg Gotha, who was born a Lutheran, never changed his religion and made it "my little royal chapel".
