The Duden Castle

SATURDAY 08 and SUNDAY
 09 OCTOBER 2022

Meeting point

Avenue Victor Rousseau 75 - 1190 Forest

This country house was designed by architect Eduard Schwartz for Wilhelm Friedrich Karl Ludwig Duden, a German industrialist who had made his fortune from lace. It stands on the top of a hill located at the centre of a park with its main façade facing Avenue Victor Rousseau. The Neo-Classical château was built between 1873 and 1875 and was based on Villa Hügel in Essen (Germany), designed for the Krupp family of industrialists. Inside is a large entrance hall with columns topped with sumptuously worked capitals, from which rises an imposing marble staircase. Since 2012, the château has been home to the Flemish department of INRACI, now part of the Luca School of Arts. Despite its conversion, many original decorative features can still be seen, including ceiling stucco work, wood panelling, marble fireplaces and mantlepieces with panels of mirror glass and original herringbone parquet floors.
