Meeting point

Avenue de la Renaissance 30 - 1000 Brussels

Originally located in a building on Rue de Namur, and then on the site of the former La Cambre Abbey, today the Royal Military Academy occupies a huge complex of buildings in the North-East district of Brussels, built on a site next to the former military manoeuvres ground. Completed in 1913, the main building was designed in a monumental Neo-Classical style by Henri Maquet, the official royal architect. Its French-stone façade juts forward, with a huge colonnade and a pediment with sculptures by Jean Hérain. The main entrance is flanked by statues of Minerva and Mars, the Roman gods of war, by sculptor Pierre-Jean Braecke. Inside, a white marble grand staircase, modelled on the one in the Paris military academy, leads to the grand auditorium, decorated with Neo-Classical pilasters with Ionic capitals. The chapel, surrounded by a balustraded balcony, is also richly decorated with columns and pilasters with sumptuous gilded capitals. The stained-glass windows by Spreters depict soldier saints, trophies and the patron saints of the different armed services.
