Impasse de Borgendael 1 - 1000 Brussels
One of the ensemble of nine buildings surrounding the Place Royale, this church with its façade resembling an Ancient Greek or Roman temple exemplifies Neo-Classical architecture in Brussels. It was built between 1776 and 1786 as part of the reconstruction of the site of the old Coudenberg Palace as a Royal Square, into which it blends harmoniously. The rectangular balustrade and wooden bell turret were added in 1849. Inside, the plastered walls and sturdy Corinthian columns convey a sense of unity, sobriety and solemnity. The interior is decorated with two large paintings by Jean-François Portaels and an organ loft dating from 1844.
