The building that today serves as Ixelles Town Hall has its origins in a delightful romance between the famous opera singer Maria Malibran (1808-1836) and the talented violinist Charles-Auguste de Bériot (1802-1870), who held the title, among others, of First Violinist to William I, King of the Netherlands from 1815 to 1840. In 1832, the couple purchased a plot of land in the country ( today Place Fernand Cocq) at Ixelles to build a house for themselves. They commissioned Belgian architect Charles Vander Straeten (1771-1834), who designed many buildings in Brussels under the Dutch regime, to draw up the plans. He created a splendid house surrounded by magnificent gardens that the locals soon nicknamed "Little Château d'Ixelles". Unfortunately, the famous couple were unable to enjoy their new home for long as Maria Malibran died tragically young in 1836.
