The Grand Hospice was designed by the architect Henri Partoes and built between 1824 and 1827 on the site of the old Grand Béguinage convent. It was built to house paupers and the sick and the building is laid out around two identical courtyards, lined with arcaded verandas that recall cloisters. After completing the Hospice, Partoes devoting himself to redesigning the surrounding buildings and streets, creating an entire district where symmetry and order reign in a significant urban ensemble.
