Residence of the Governor of the National Bank of Belgium

SATURDAY 07 & SUNDAY 08 OCTOBER 2023

Meeting Point

Rue du Bois Sauvage 10, 1000 Brussels

Duration of guided tour: 45 min.

The Residence of the Governor of the National Bank of Belgium is the last surviving part of a vast complex built for the National Bank between 1860 and 1878, designed by Henri Beyaert, assisted by Wynand Janssens. This eclectic building was designed to be a monument to banking and was inspired by classical concepts. It blends features of the Italian and French Renaissance styles with those of the Louis XVI style, taught at the School of Fine Arts and widely used during the Second Empire era. The smallest details of its rich decoration and furnishings were meticulously designed by Beyaert himself, assisted by the decorator Georges Houtstont. The exemplary design and creation of the building and its interior bears witness to the breadth of Beyaert's knowledge of architectural styles. The building still belongs to the National Bank and the guided tours during the BBEA will be led by members of the Bank's staff.
