Schaerbeek Town Hall
This monumental Flemish Neo-Renaissance-style town hall was built between 1884 and 1887 to the designs of Jules-Jacques Van Ysendyck, the winner of a competition held by Schaerbeek Town Council. The building is strategically located on the axis running from the Royal Saint Mary's church to Schaerbeek station. This majestic building shows great unity of style and is firmly in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, with typical decorative features. The facade proudly displays its gables, local red bricks and a turret, while the lavish interior is richly decorated with oak and marble panelling and coffered ceilings. The architect's choice of this historicist style was deliberate, as it symbolises the power of local government by referring to its glorious past. The building was badly damaged in an arson attack in April 1911, but was rebuilt as a replica of the original by Maurice Van Ysendyck, the son of the original architect. |
