Tour et Taxis
SATURDAY 07 & SUNDAY 08 OCTOBER 2023
Meeting Point
Duration of guided tour: 75 min.
A must-see of the Brussels cityscape, laid out along the canal, Tour & Taxis is opening its doors to visitors during the BBEA. Running parallel to the canal, the Royal Warehouse's large red-brick facades are decorated with bluestone in an eclectic mix, inspired by the Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. The building has a concrete frame, which permitted the creation of a huge internal space into which freight trains were shunted. A hundred metres further on, the freight transhipment station ("Gare maritime") was comprehensively restored in recent years, a project that won the Europa Nostra Heritage Prize in 2021. Built in 1907, this huge goods station shares similarities with other great railway stations built in the same period, such as St Pancras in London and the Gare du Nord in Paris. The guided tours end at the Customs House, where clerks processed the customs clearance paperwork for merchandise arriving in Brussels. It is the only building specifically built for this purpose in Belgium and features a long hall with counters and service windows, lit from above by a glazed roof. |
