Nestling between two modern buildings, the Neo-Classical facade of No. 28, Square de Meeûs is one of the last remains of what was originally a nineteenth-century residential district. This house was the home of the Liederkerke family until the 1960s, and became a listed monument in 1993. Inside, a magnificent grand staircase and several original features have survived. Today it is linked to a second Neo-Classical building on the other side of the block and forms part of one of the first five-star hotels in Brussels. A complex of four former townhouses was originally created by dividing up the buildings of a convent, then they were converted for use as offices and gradually linked together around a courtyard garden. Since 1991, the complex has been the Stanhope Hotel Brussels by Thon Hotels, which became the favourite place to stay in the city of many celebrities and members of visiting royal families during its golden age in the 1990s.
